Feeding Treats To Your Koi
Koi will eat pretty much anything you give them, regardless of whether it is good for them or not.Since Koi do not have a clue when it comes to good and bad foods, you must control which snacks you feed them and how often. Koi also do not know when to stop eating and you can quickly find that your Koi has weight issues especially when overfeeding feeding then non-nutritional foods.
If you feel that your Koi deserves a treat, there are many different types of fun food that may contain nutritional value and not harm your fish in any way.
Natural Koi Treats
When feeding your Koi treats, the best type to give them is what they would naturally find in the pond, such as earthworms, tadpoles and bloodworms. These are usually found in ponds and may be eaten by your koi without your knowledge. Take a look around your pond to find out what natural treats are available. Once you have found out what is there, you can either dig up the treats from the ground around your pond or buy similar treats from your local store.
Prawns
The protein content in prawns is high, which means that they are very good for your Koi. You can but regular or frozen prawns, but if you do buy frozen then make sure that they are fully defrosted before you give them to your fish. Prawns are one of the best foods to use when encouraging your Koi to hand feed.
Lettuce
The vitamin and mineral content of lettuce is high and is healthy for your Koi. You can also keep the lettuce leaves whole as your Koi will enjoy tearing the leaves into smaller pieces.
Fruit
You can feed your Koi wuite a wide range of different fruit, but make sure that you break the fruit up into small pieces before giving it to them. As most fruit is high in naturla sugars, it can be bad for your Koi in large amounts and should only be feed o your fish on special occasions.
Bread
Roll a piece of bread into small balls before you throw it into your pond. Make sure that you avoid white bread as i may contain a small amount of bleach and/or oher chemicals which can potentially be dangerous to your Koi's health.
Whatever treats you decvide to feed your Koi, it is important that you do not over do it as excessive treats will interfere with our Koi's diet.
You must take extra care if you wish ot feed your Koi certain oods like corn, beans and grapes as they contain an outer skin which cannot be properly digested by your fish. If oyu decide that you really want to feed your Koi this type of treat then you must make sure that you remove this skin before feeding them the treat.
